NPP failed Ghana in road maintenance – Agbodza

Kwame Governs Agbodza, Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to prioritize road maintenance over the past eight years, leading to significant neglect of the country’s road infrastructure.

During his vetting on Monday, January 20, Agbodza stressed that maintaining existing roads should take precedence over constructing new ones.

He pointed out that road maintenance has sharply declined under the NPP administration, with previous years showing much stronger performance.

The Adaklu MP highlighted a clear discrepancy in the figures, noting that in 2016, the country had successfully maintained 9,000 kilometers of roads. However, by 2023, under the NPP government, only 3,000 kilometers had been maintained, showing a notable drop in the country’s focus on road upkeep.

“The principle is that more should be spent on maintaining existing roads than on building new ones. According to the records, road maintenance has worsened over the last eight years. In fact, the 2016 maintenance record is unmatched to date. In 2023, where 9,000 kilometers were maintained before, only 3,000 kilometers were maintained under the NPP, showing a clear failure in road maintenance,” he said.

  1. Great point about prioritizing road maintenance over new constructions. It’s concerning to see such a significant drop from 9,000 kilometers in 2016 to just 3,000 in 2023. This clearly indicates a shift in focus, and not for the better. The NPP administration needs to address this decline urgently, as poor road conditions can have widespread economic and social impacts. I wonder what specific measures they plan to take to reverse this trend. Do you think this is a result of budget reallocation or simply a lack of prioritization? It’s crucial to hold them accountable for such a stark difference in performance. What’s your take on how this affects the public’s trust in their governance?
