IGP sets up Special Investigative team to probe 2020, 2024 election-related deaths

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has responded to a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to investigate the deaths linked to the 2020 and 2024 elections, The Chronicle newspaper reports.
According to the report, the IGP has established a specialized investigative team at the CID Headquarters, led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe. The team, composed of experienced and skilled officers, has been tasked with specific timelines to complete their investigations and submit a report.
In his response, the IGP assured the President that the team would be provided with all necessary resources to meet its objectives. The report also mentioned that the investigative effort would build on previous work carried out by the IGP and his team since his appointment in 2021.
As part of his initiatives upon assuming office, Dr. Dampare created the Cold Case Unit at the CID Headquarters to handle unresolved crime cases, including the 2020 election-related deaths. The unit has reportedly made significant progress, with some suspects already facing prosecution.
President John Mahama’s directive, issued in a letter dated January 10, 2025, called for thorough investigations into the deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
